The Foundations of Buddhism

趁尊者來台的殊勝因緣
推薦賴老師新近翻譯的著作《佛教基本通

Rupert Gethin所作的這本The Foundations of Buddhism
以簡要清晰的筆法引領讀者正確理解佛法僧三寶及戒定慧三學
根據當代的學術研究成果來釐清佛教不同部派的發展
又能回歸基礎教義來理出隱含其中的佛學根本核心
可使初學者避免因視域不足而產生偏執或不當批判
BTW,
這本書解行並重
在進階義理與修行實踐上的著墨較一般入門書來得多
因此對佛教史、佛教哲學、佛學實踐有興趣的
以這本書為primer應能開展出一條通往智慧的道路:)

賴老師的譯文堪稱暢達
但因為採用了許多傳統的中文名相來譯專有名詞
有些地方對於初機者而言可能仍過於難解
此外
以下是我認為有誤譯而易使讀者錯解之處
提出來供大家參考──

1. 第115頁倒數第四行,根據原著應該譯為
"這個體驗不是「無有」(a nothing)──僅僅沒有貪嗔痴而已──而是所謂的「無為」(unconditioned)"

2. 第139頁最後一段,因為一般人對幸福的理解可能較為粗淺,所以這邊未仔細定義或區分「功德」「福德」兩個名相,容易使人誤判佛教精神生活的核心

3. 第143頁第四行,根據原著此處的「僧伽成功」是名詞,指上述僧制的成功(the success of monastic Sangha)

4.第284頁第五行,根據原著應譯成
"因為經驗主體(所謂的「能執」)與經驗對象(所謂的「所執」)..."
